An Unspoken History: Roma Artwork in Bódvalenke

As I reflect back on time spent during in-country orientation with my fellow Central Europe volunteers, my day spent in the village of Bódvalenke stands out amongst the rest. Through the work of the Freskófalu Project (Fresco Village), the ordinary stones and earth used to build the homes of the people in Bódvalenke have been transformed into canvas and story. The artwork and dedication of Ester Pásztor, the director and founder, are equally beautiful and chilling. The project was meant to express through pigment and paint the tormented yet vibrant history of the Roma people throughout Central Europe. Additionally, they continue to hope the project will bring a source of opportunity and income to the residents of the village. I encourage you to explore the Freskófalu Project website as well as my fellow YAGM Michelle's thoughtful reflection of our time in Bódvalenke.
